Prosthetic Artificial Eye

Prosthetic Artificial Eye

One eye may be absent since birth or lost due to injury. Various treatment procedures like use of ball implants, use of lining from inside the mouth (mucous membrane grafting), expanders etc. can be performed to restore near normal appearance. A prosthetic eye can look very natural, and movement is possible in some cases. Artificial eyes can also be placed after removal of a painful/cosmetically unacceptable, blind eye too.

It creates a balanced facial appearance and increases comfort in the eye socket. Implanting a prosthetic eye is often recommended after an eye is surgically removed due to eye damage, disease, or problems like glaucoma and tumours.

    Procedure

  • Firstly, all anatomical landmarks are determined. The occular implant is surgically placed into the eye socket. The implant is placed and supported by cushioning material.
  • The impression is taken to design and fabricate the eye prosthesis in the laboratory set up. The components of the eyeball are designed artificially on the prosthesis to recreate the natural appearance.
  • A trial is made during every step with the live eye socket so that the outcome is precise and the prosthesis is placed perfectly. Finally the prosthetic eye is placed inside the socket. You can live with this for a lifetime without any need for replacement.
