Ortho-K Lenses

Ortho-K Lenses

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (cornea) so you can see clearly the following day after you remove the lenses when you wake up.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a non-surgical process that uses specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses to reshape the cornea temporarily, the clear front surface of the eye. This cornea reshaping corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism without surgery or glasses. The lenses are worn while you sleep and gently flatten the cornea.

At Deshpande Eye Care Center, we can assess your specific needs and help you make an informed decision about how to correct your vision.

These lenses are prescribed for two purposes:

  • To correct refractive errors (primarily near-sightedness, but also astigmatismand far-sightedness). In some cases, ortho-k also is used to correct presbyopia.
  • To slow the progression of childhood myopia.

Myopia Control and Ortho-K

Ortho-K has shown to be a very successful option of preventing short sighted progression. Slowing the progression of myopia is important especially for children with parents who are short sighted.

By correcting the short sightedness with Ortho-K lenses prevents the eye from elongating and potential risks to eyesight as the tissues of the eye stretch.

Other Benefits of Ortho-k Lens Include:

  • Natural vision for recreation, sports and leisure is dramatically enhanced.
  • Provides good unaided vision for occupations that require it such as pilots, policemen, firefighters or any jobs that require better visual acuity.
  • Patients who participate in sports can have visual freedom, not needing to rely on eyeglasses or conventional contact lenses while playing.
